Epek and IDES Well/Water Projects in IDP Camps
Mrs. Nargis: Living in Quaragh IDP Camp
My name is Nargis, I am 37 years old and I learned to read and write from my husband at home. Unfortunately, I lost my husband 9 years ago and I displaced from Zabul about 5 years from now. I lost my husband because he had heart problem and he was car mechanic. I have only one daughter who married 10 years ago and I am living with my small nephew who is 6 years old. No any piece of land left from my husband in Zabul province.
I was surviving by handicraft for women (needling). Now the people do not like the needling because it is expensive. While the internal conflict increased in our village I had to leave my house and finally decided to come to this camp to be alive.
I have a lot of problem here like cold weather of the winter and lack of food items. We had problem to get enough drinking water in the camp, but thanks God that the EPEK International and their partner IDES made some water distribution points in different places of the camp and I can get drinking water easily.
Before that I had to stay almost an hour to get water like other people were waiting on the line. The children, men and women were standing one by one to get water from the hand pumps, as there was always rush on the hand-pump all the time but the EPEK International solved our problem to get the drinking water now.
My house was far from the hand-pump and I had to walk a long way to reach the hand pump to bring two small gallons and most of the time I had to purchase water while there was rush on water. My nephew is also very weak and it is very hard to him to bring water from hand pump. As I see now the EPEK replaced the old hand pump and also installed the water-pump, hand pump and connected it to the water distribution points which we can get water easily and there is no rush on the hand pump too.
We thank you very much for such initiation.
Mr. Saleem: Living in Chaman-e-Babrak IDP Camp
My name is Saleem, I am 26 years old, I studied up to class 12 and I’m from Helmand province, I am one of these people displaced and left our hometown due to internal conflict. We are five families in this houses and each family built one room just to spent day and night, we cannot return to our house because those people doesn’t accept us and do not trust us too. I have a big sister and a brother both have married in this camp so we are very big family here now. I live with my old mother and my father is passed away.
Access to the pure drinking water was the most important issue for us and as we are a big family and need more water every day, we spent water a lot than any other family here and we need several gallons of water every day and I’m responsible to cover water to all family member. So the people are even fighting with us and they say that why we take such water.
I also was the witness that the people were fighting with each other because everybody demanding to get more water. On one hand most of the hand-pumps were not working properly, on the other hand it is very cold here wait until we get water, it was really a big problem for us.
I saw that the EPEK International built some distribution points and installed the good quality hand pump and water pump in our camp, I am very glad now to have these facilities here and again say thank you for your support.
We also have too many problem in this camp, the weather is cold and sometime while raining, I have slept several times as it is mud in the rainy day. I was saw that the EPEK International installed the water-pump, hand-pump and water tanker to the well closed to our house and now we can get water very easily. It is my first time taking water from water storage/ water distribution point.
Thank you very much EPEK staff.
